I want to lie down أريد أن أضطجع كي أنال قسطا من الراحة \ أنام
نلاحظ كما هو ظاهر لا يحتاج لمفعول
أما لو قلنا : She lays \ laid the book on the desk
نرى في المثال الثاني أننا بحاجة لمفعول للفعل يضع ( يضع شيئا ما في مكان ما )
    الشيء = المفعول

The verbs lie and lay are confusing
The verb lie which its conjugation (lie - lay - lain) = recline, rest, be located
There is also another meaning for the verb lie = doesn't say the truth
The verb lay its conjugation is ( lay-laid - laid ) = place , put

The most distinction between these two verbs is that the verb ( lie) is intransitive verb ( is not followed by object) whereas the verb lay is transitive so it is followed by an object

Quiz 1 Correct the mistakes : Answers
The ship lays at the wharf. It should be ( lies ) = takes a situation there
. The old lady has gone to lay down. lie down not lay down = recline
The check is laying on the desk. lying
Just this example so that you get it : ( but I lay \ laid the check on the desk

He has laid there all day. lain = the past participle of lie
A narrow valley lays between the two ridges ( lies)
    معناها يقع
يقع واديا ضيقا بين السلستين الجبلتين

Please lie that book on the desk. please lay that book on the desk
من فضلك ضع الكتاب فوق المنضدة
He was lying on the floor of the hall. correct
I saw the pencil laying on the desk. lying
لا يوجد مفعول بعد الفعل lie \ lying
وإنما جاء بعده عبارة حرف جر والمثال الذي يليه نفس الحال
رأيت قلم الرصاص ملقيا على الطاولة
The money was laying there. lying
We can say someone laid \ lays the money there
the word ( money) = object of the lay

The poor man had laid in bed for three days. lain
I found my hat laying on the floor. lying
He should lay down at once. lie down
The child was laying on the grass. was lying
كان الطفل يضطجع \ مضطجعا على الحشيش أو العشب
I left my watch laying on the desk. lying
He had laid there for two days. lain the past participle of lie
The thief ran away, but the detective is laying for him. lying
from lie = not say the truth
    هنا معناه يكذب
We must lay low if we would capture the beast. lie low
    هنا lie low معناها يكمن
يجب أن نكمن \ نخفض اجسامنا لو اردنا اصطياد الوحش
We laid down to rest. we lay down = past tense of lie

Lay \ lie the best lecture

Let’s see how these tricky verbs work Lie (to lie down on a bed): lie, lay, lain, lying

      Today I lie in bed.

      Yesterday I lay in bed.

Many times I have lain in bed.

Yesterday I was lying in bed all day.

Lying in bed all day is boring.

Lay (to place something, to set something down): lay, laid, laid, laying

Today I lay the book on the counter.

Yesterday I laid the book on the counter.

Many times I have laid the book on the counter.

Yesterday I was laying the book on the counter when Mom came home.

Laying books on the kitchen counter is against the rules in my house.

Here are some tips for remembering these very important and very tricky verbs:

It may be helpful to repeat this to yourself like a little song: lie, lay, lain, lie, lay, lain. It’s sort of like the “i before e except after c...” song that helps us remember spelling rules. If you get stuck on that odd verb to lie, start through this little ditty and you’ll quickly find the right word.

Remember that the verb to lay is really not very odd. It works just like to say and to pay. Those verbs are irregular, but they aren’t confusing.

Today I say that I pay; yesterday I said that I paid; many times I have said that I have paid. To lay works the same way: lay, laid, laid. Nobody says that hens lie eggs. We all get that one correct: hens lay eggs. And those hens are mighty busy! Visualize how active and busy those hens are laying one egg after another. Lay is an active, busy word. When you’re doing something active (laying down your backpack, laying a new rug on the floor), lay is the word you want. Remember that lie is a quiet word. Here’s a silly ditty you can use to remind yourself of that (notice all the “eye” sounds): At night, I turn out my light and lie. Whether it’s on your sofa, on your beach towel, or on your bed, if you are quietly reclining, you’re lying—never laying. Substitute the word put. If the sentence sounds right, lay is the word you want. If it doesn’t sound right, lie is the word you want. Does it sound right to say that you put the book on the table? Yes, so it’s correct to say that you lay the book on the table. Does it sound right to say that your dog is putting on the floor? No, so it is correct to say that your dog is lying on the floor.
