Nine Arab poets will be participating in the 13th Session of the World Poetry Festival which kicked-off in the Romania city of Curtea de Arge?, the capital of Wallachia throughout the XIV and XV centuries under the rule of Vlad the Impaler also known as Dracula.
This session will see the participation of a large number of poets from around the world; Poland, Romania, Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine, Georgia, Estonia, Finland, Norway, Canada, Germany, Belgium, Italy, North Korea, Hong Kong, Mexico, Cuba and Iran.
Participating Arab poets include: Lebanese expatriate Kaisar Afeef, who lives in Mexico; Moroccan poet Taha Adnan, who lives in Brussels; Iraqi poet Abdul Hadi Sadoun, who lives in Madrid; Kuwaiti poet Dikhil Al Khalifa; Yemeni poet Nabila Al Zubair; Tunisian Maniya Bu Layla; Jordanian poet Issam Al-Saadi and Palestinian poets Moaen Shalabia and Naeem Arayedi
The festival was first launched 32 years ago through the Orient Occident Academy, in 1977 to be exact, as an initiative of Romanian poets Dumitru Ion and Carolina Ileka. The activities of the festival ceased for 21 years, but were re-launched again in 1997 to continue to the present day. The East West Academy presents four poetry awards, in addition to a major international poetry award: the Balkan Grand Prize; the Orient Occident Grand Prize (for Arts); the National Grand Prize; and the Grand European Prize.
Several names have won the grand poetry award such as Macedonian Mikhail Rendzov; Manuel Diaz Martinez of Cuba; John F Dean of Ireland; Satoko Tamura of Japan; Antonio Brobbeta of Spain; and Tarek al-Tayyib of Sudan. The Orient Occident Academy will be issuing an anthology of poetry including a selection of poetry by the festival participants.
