Through the wringer

Definition : To put someone Through the wringer : cause a lot of stress; give someone a hard time

A wringer is a machine that squeezes all the water out of something. For instance, all dryers have wringers. The wringers help get the water out of your laundry. If you tried putting a person through the wringer, it would not be a very pleasant experience. That person would be squeezed so hard, it would hurt. When you put someone through the wringer, it means you gave him a hard time. Maybe you made him feel uncomfortable, gave him lots of work to do, or asked him lots of personal questions

Examples

His wife put him through the wringer when she asked for a divorce

This new job is really putting me through the wringer. It’s really difficult

My dad put my suitor through the wringer the first time he met him, but my he survived and now they get along great

First of all my name is Ibrahim. I do not know what's wrong with you, it seems you have nothing to do but to criticise what I post here in an unfair way. I am quite sure you behave in this way not because you are so keen on mentioning the sources ( it's a shame to let someone use you as a cat's paw ). And I would like to read a creative piece of text in your own words to learn from you. I tried to help beginners to simply learn a slang phrase. Please stop this meaningless babble, I am not writing a thesis. Let me whisper to you " Save your valuable pieces of advice for yourself and do not play the role of the defender of knowledge " . Also stop commenting on any of my posts for good as I do not want to step into the swamp of silly asinine arguments. Thanks and farewell

شكراً للتصحيح وجل من لا يسهو وألتمس لنفسي العذر فحين يكتب المرء وهو مستفز فلابد أن يخطئ وأتمني أن أقرأ في القريب العاجل موضوعاً من إبداعك نتعرف فيه علي أبكار بنات أفكارك ورائع كلماتك بالإنجليزية عسي أن نتعلم منك وندعو لك بالخير. أقول لك يا أخي بكل ود إني درست اللغة الإنجليزية وأدبها في ج. كمبردج وقد أسعدني الزمان بخطاب من جلالة ملكة بريطانيا العظمي إليزابيث الثانية تمتدح فيه فكري وأسلوب تعبيري عن هذا الفكر بالإنجليزية والله يشهد علي ذلك ويمنعني الحياء من نشره فليس من شيمتي الفخر والتفاخر ليقيني أن العلم بحر زاخر بلا شطئان ولا قيعان وفوق كل ذي علم عليم.

طبعاً عندما يأتي زميل بمصطلحات من لغة أخرى ( انكليزية , فرنسية , يونانية ... ) فضمناً هو لم يؤلفها . ونحن نفهم بأنه أخذها من أحد مصادر هذه اللغة .
وهو بذلك مشكور .
ولا داعي لذكر كلمة منقول لأن اللبيب من الإشارة يفهم .
ونتمنى أن يستمر الأستاذ إبراهيم بتقديم كل ما هو قيم ومفيد .

أما الأستاذ رأفت فأدعوك إلى تسخير قدراتك اللغوية في البناء وليس في الهدم .
