The detention
A short story of Brahim Darghouthi
Translated into English by Walid Akermi
At dawn, the soldiers came stomping the ground of the detention with their heavy boots. He woke up before they opened the door, and sat down rubbing his eyes with both of his hands which were nearly frozen by the cold
The detachment major pointed at him to stop so he did. The military policemen walked, so he walked in front of them
They arrived to the execution place, he saw a bunch of prisoners which their hands and legs were tied up and their eyes were blindfolded. He said to himself: how many they are on this rainy day and didn’t say anything else since he was used to do his work
The detachment major passed him a knife, so he started slaughtering the men piled on the ground one after another saying the name of Allah with each head getting cut
