Mother! Kiss the flag for me
A poem of Mounira Fehri
Translated by Walid Akermi
Good morning mother
Good morning father
How’s it going without me?
Did my little sister come to check me
To sleep in my arms like she used to do every morning?
Had she shouted loudly when she found my bed empty?
My wish was to die in your hands
My mother
But they deceived us and I died lonely in the mountain
I was about to put some bread in my mouth
After a hard day of hunger and thirst
I felt a burning fire devouring me
And I knew it was the end
Then I’ve seen you mother
Believe me
I saw you taking the bread off the sandy oven
And carrying it in the tray
On your head
I saw myself teasing you and jumping around you to get some bread
You were laughing saying
Can’t you be patient?
I saw my father washing after a hard day of work
In the neighbours’ field
And he tries hard to not show his tiredness
I heard his voice praying for me
“May god bless you my son”
Sorry father
I’ve attempted to be like your spirit’s scent
But I fail every time against your vainglory, your vanity and your piety
Mother! I saw myself at dawn carrying my bag and going back to work
And you were following me with a poached egg
And a piece of bread dipped in oil
Sorry mother! My wish was to make you happy with my success in Life
Sorry I only multiplied your pain... I didn’t make you happy like others did
You were planning for me the most beautiful future… and how many times
you’d given names to my children
Whose father didn’t get married yet
At that very moment I saw my sister begging me
To buy her a toy for the Eid
And a red jogging like her friend at the nursery school
I’d seen all that as the fire was devouring me
Mother, don’t cry! I’m happy where I am
Just apologize for me to my sister for the Eid dress
And apologize to dad and ask him to forgive me
I didn’t want him to suffer because of my absence
Tell him; you still have my little brother
He’ll be a man and make you happier
Say hello to all my friends in the neighbourhood
And apologize for me. Tell them I won’t be with you in this Eid
Say hello to the country soil and kiss it for me
Say hello to my country
And tell her that Mohamed has died
Carrying you in the pupil of his eyes
He swears he will protect you with his blood
And he did
Say to Tunisia that Mohamed has died
And his dream is that you remain lofty and great
O mother! Kiss the flag for me
I just forgot to kiss it before I died
